2015-04-26 Incident
First Responder in Charge: Lamar Hires
Location: Devil’s Eye Cave System Date: April 26, 2015
Victim: male
Age: 68
Dive Plan: Ride DPV back to Mainland jump then push/ride DPV in Mainland
Gear Configuration: Backmount Steel 95’s
Additional Gear: Minnus DPV and deco bottle left at entrance
Dive Buddy: Gear Configuration: Sidemount Steel 95’s (? Not sure about her cylinder size)
Additional Gear: DPV and deco bottle left at entrance
Body located at Park Bench approximately 300 ft in the cave. The divers were separated approximately 3100’ from the entrance due to heavy silt. Buddy waited in clear water for 3 to 4 minutes then exited and called 911. After Ginnie Springs got the call, I was called to activate a team.
We knew the area the incident occurred should clear in about 20 minutes so we assumed a train cave diver might resolve being separated from the line in the small fissure and make his way out. So the first team was instructed to proceed along the main line to the jump but be on the look out for any sign of the diver. Since this was late Sunday afternoon no other cave teams were in the water. They found the body, filmed the scene and brought the body out. They went back to retrieve their gear from the point of the recovery.
