Incident Reports
The IUCRR can only document underwater-overhead incidents that it knows about and was involved with at some level. Keeping track of and recording every incident around the world would require more resources (money, time, travel, etc.) than is available to us. We cannot base our reports on hearsay or 2nd-hand information. The information must be acquired by IUCRR divers on-site. Consequently, there are only a limited number of incidents that we can record. Our members volunteer to help in the rescue/recovery of one or more victims, and then to document everything they saw, as well as all facts about the incident. We do not ever determine the cause of an incident, we simply pass on the data for others to make their own conclusions. Collected data is initially “owned” by the law enforcement officials that are responsible for the scene of the incident. All data that the IUCRR is allowed to maintain is always reviewed and approved by the Regional Coordinator responsible for the incident. That information is then reviewed and, when approved by the IUCRR Board of Directors, it is posted on the IUCRR website.
Not every report is published on the IUCRR website due to reasons beyond our control. The two most common reasons the information is not made available are because the responsible law enforcement officials have not released it, or because there is some legal wrangling associated with the incident. Also, the IUCRR does not ever publish the name of the victim(s) because that is not relevant to the report.
The following are reports that have been generated by the IUCRR team members on various incidents.
By clicking on the link below that takes you to the reports, you agree to the following restrictions:
- You will not copy the report, or any portion of the report, without expressed written consent of the IUCRR
- You will not excerpt any part of a report for use in a publication, in any format, without expressed written consent of the IUCRR.
- You will not use any part of a report for any purpose except for personal education/information.
The IUCRR does not claim to report the final status of any accident. Information and facts are gathered on a best-effort basis. No conclusions as to cause of death are expressed or implied. The IUCRR is not responsible for any mis-use of the information. It is the policy of the IUCRR to report all accidents for which it is informed. If there is an accident that you know about and have information on that is not included in the list, please contact us at IUCRR-Info@iucrr.org.
Reports do not include the victims’ name as it is irrelevant for the purpose of educating/information cave divers about the situations surrounding an accident.
